# Golf in Casablanca: eucalyptus-lined fairways and the Atlantic corniche

> Casablanca offers three courses no more than forty minutes from the centre: Casa Green Golf Club, an 18-hole Jeremy Pern design opened in 2013 on the edge of the Bouskoura forest, the nine-hole Royal Golf d'Anfa right in the city, and the 18 holes of Mohammedia, founded in 1925 beside the ocean. Golfers come for a short break combining golf, Art Deco architecture and Moroccan cooking, ideally in spring and autumn.

Casablanca is not a resort town, and that is precisely its appeal for a curious golfer. Morocco's economic capital lends itself to a short, well-filled stay: a round in the morning, the Aïn Diab corniche at aperitif time, a table in the medina in the evening. The courses are not grouped into a resort; they are spread around the city, south towards Bouskoura, in the heart of the Anfa district and north-east at Mohammedia, the former Fedala.

The three layouts are nothing alike, and that is their interest. Casa Green is a modern course, long and defended by water and sand; Anfa, set within the racecourse grounds, calls for touch more than power; Mohammedia, which Moroccan golfers nickname "the Scottish one", plays in the wind between sea and forest. The climate, softened by the Atlantic, makes golf pleasant for most of the year.

Anfa and Mohammedia belong to the same private club, the Royal Golf Anfa Mohammedia, which strictly controls access for non-members: you play by invitation or at visitor rates, which needs arranging in advance. Casa Green, run by Madaëf Golfs, can be booked online. Three to five nights are enough, and the trip extends easily to El Jadida or Rabat, each of which has its own courses.

## The courses

### Casa Green Golf Club

Architect: Jeremy Pern · Opened 2013 · 18 holes · Par 72

Opened in 2013 at the centre of the Green Town development, a few minutes from the Sidi Maârouf business district, Jeremy Pern's course spreads across 92 hectares on the edge of the Bouskoura forest. A par 72 of 6,533 metres from the back tees, it blends the spirit of Scottish links with Moroccan landscapes: dry riverbeds, desert areas, 7 hectares of lakes and 90 bunkers. It is the city's championship course, best kept for players who enjoy long shots and strategy. The 2,500 m² clubhouse houses a restaurant, a hammam and a sauna.

### Royal Golf d'Anfa

9 holes · Par 35

In the heart of Casablanca, inside the Anfa racecourse, this nine-hole course is played twice round for a par 70 of 5,537 metres. Distances are modest and the greens raised: the club itself warns that the layout is negotiated with imagination and an excellent short game rather than with power. The practice ground has been rebuilt to international standards, with a grass area. Ideal for a late afternoon without leaving the city, provided you are invited or have booked at visitor rates.

Signature hole: The 3rd, a par 5, is stroke index 1 on the course: the hole that often decides the card.

### Royal Golf Anfa Mohammedia

Opened 1925 · 18 holes · Par 72

Founded in 1925 in Mohammedia, then still called Fedala, this 18-hole par 72 alternates seaside holes and stretches through forest, among eucalyptus, mimosa, broom and palms. The fairways roll, the greens are small and the prevailing wind never lets you forget why it is nicknamed "the Scottish one". It has hosted many Royal Moroccan Golf Federation competitions and professional tour events. The club regularly carries out work on its greens and fairways: we check the course's condition before every booking.

**Concierge tip:** For Anfa and Mohammedia, do not turn up without a booking: the club applies strict rules to non-members and we arrange access in advance. Start with Anfa to sharpen your short game, then keep Casa Green, open from 7am to 7pm and bookable online, for the day you want a true championship course.

## Where to stay

### Four Seasons Hotel Casablanca

On the Boulevard de la Corniche, within the Anfa Place complex, the Four Seasons sets its 186 rooms and suites facing the Atlantic, a few minutes from the Hassan II Mosque. Ask for an ocean-view king room: only these have a private balcony, a rarity in the city. A large spa, an outdoor pool, and Mint for a pastilla or a harira after a day's golf, before the sun sets over the ocean.

### Le Doge Hotel & Spa

A former mansion in the heart of the Art Deco district, steeped in the 1930s and a member of Relais & Châteaux. Sixteen rooms and suites, each dedicated to a figure of the era, from Coco Chanel to Ernest Hemingway, a spa, a restaurant, Le Jasmine, and a roof terrace for the first drink of the evening. For those who prefer the intimacy of a house to the scale of a grand hotel.

## Where to dine

### Rick's Café

Opened in 2004 by Kathy Kriger, a former American diplomat, Rick's Café recreates the bar from the film in a 1930s mansion set against the ramparts of the old medina. Horseshoe arches, brass and fireplaces; a pianist plays jazz every evening. The cosmopolitan menu gives pride of place to Atlantic fish and grills.

### La Sqala

Set in a fortified bastion of the old medina's ramparts, La Sqala serves traditional Moroccan cooking in an Andalusian garden. Come for a tagine in the shade at lunch, or in the morning for a Moroccan breakfast before a late-morning tee time.

### Le Cabestan

Founded in 1926 near the El Hank lighthouse, on the corniche, Le Cabestan is a Casablanca institution, since renovated and arranged as a restaurant and lounge bar. Book a table by the picture windows to watch the Atlantic waves break on the rocks at sunset.

## Beyond golf

### The Hassan II Mosque

Completed in 1993 on a promontory above the Atlantic, the Hassan II Mosque has a 210-metre minaret. Its roof opens over the prayer hall, decorated with zellige tilework, Middle Atlas cedar and marble. Non-Muslims visit on guided tours, at times that vary with prayers: dress modestly.

### The Habous quarter

Built between 1918 and 1955 by French architects who wanted to respect the ways of the traditional medina, the Habous quarter is Casablanca's "new medina". Beneath its shady arcades you will find rugs, hammered copper, ceramics, carved wood and leather, a few steps from the Mohammed V Mosque. A morning is enough, ideally on a rest day between rounds.

### The Art Deco city

Le Doge and Rick's Café both cultivate the spirit of the 1930s. Around the hotel, the Art Deco district is best explored on foot, eyes raised, among white façades, ironwork and balconies. Set off in the late afternoon, when the low light brings out the relief, and end the evening at Rick's Café.

## When to go

The cold Canary Current tempers the climate: Casablanca stays mild almost all year, and summer remains moderate. Spring, from March to June, and autumn, from September to November, offer the best conditions. Summer golf is easy thanks to the ocean breeze. Rainfall, around 412 mm a year, is concentrated in winter: the season remains playable, but expect a few grey days and heavier ground.

## Getting there

Mohammed V airport (CMN), at Nouaceur, is around forty minutes from the centre by car, and Casa Green lies on the way, towards Bouskoura. ONCF's Al Bidaoui train links the airport to Casa-Port and Casa-Voyageurs stations every hour. Then allow around fifteen minutes to Anfa, half an hour to Casa Green and some forty minutes to Mohammedia: a car with driver is simplest.
