# Golf in Stellenbosch: fairways, vineyards and ancient oaks in the Winelands

> Stellenbosch, a university town in the Winelands some fifty kilometres east of Cape Town, lies within forty minutes of four championship courses: De Zalze and Stellenbosch Golf Club on the edge of town, Erinvale at Somerset West and Pearl Valley, a Jack Nicklaus design, near Paarl. Golfers come for golf among mountains and vines, for the wine estates and the restaurants that go with them. The best period runs from October to April, the dry southern summer.

Founded in 1679 by Governor Simon van der Stel, Stellenbosch is the second-oldest town in South Africa. Afrikaners call it Eikestad, the city of oaks: some of those shading Dorp Street were planted around 1760. Around it, the Eerste valley is enclosed by mountains, the Simonsberg, the Helderberg and the peaks of Jonkershoek, whose flanks are covered in vines right up to the first rocks.

Golf is played in this setting. Stellenbosch Golf Club, founded in 1904, hosted the South African Open in 1999 and again in 2026. De Zalze, designed by Peter Matkovich, unrolls its fairways among vineyards and olive trees on the southern edge of town. A little further out, Gary Player's Erinvale, around twenty-five minutes away, and Pearl Valley, Jack Nicklaus's course, about half an hour away, have also hosted the national Open.

The trip moves to the rhythm of wine. The Stellenbosch wine route has existed since 1971, and you pass easily from an early tee time to lunch on an estate terrace. The town, enlivened by its university, is best explored on foot in the evening, among whitewashed houses, galleries and restaurants. Cape Town airport is around 35 minutes by road.

## The courses

### De Zalze Golf Club

Architect: Peter Matkovich · Opened 2001 · 18 holes · Par 72

Designed by Peter Matkovich, also responsible for Arabella and Steenberg, De Zalze spreads across three former farms on the southern edge of Stellenbosch, ten minutes or so from the centre, among vineyards, olive trees and lavender, facing the Helderberg. The Blaauwklippen River crosses the estate and comes into play several times. At just over 7,000 yards from the back tees, the course, ranked in South Africa's top 100, co-hosted the 2006 World Amateur Team Championships with Stellenbosch Golf Club. Varied rather than punishing, it suits every level.

Signature hole: The 13th, a par 4, is played from three tees set on a lake, linked by a wooden walkway; you must carry the ball to the fairway on the right of the water.

### Stellenbosch Golf Club

Opened 1904 · 18 holes · Par 72

The fourth-oldest club in South Africa, founded in 1904, Stellenbosch Golf Club went from nine to eighteen holes in 1953. It is an almost flat parkland course a few minutes from the centre, whose difficulty lies in the consistency it demands over a series of long par 4s. Water comes into play on the 2nd, 5th, 12th and 18th. It hosted the South African Open in 1999 and again in March 2026, as well as five editions of the South African Masters. A classic course for consistent players.

Signature hole: The 8th, a par 5 nicknamed "Snakes and Grapes", is threatened on both sides; the 14th, another par 5, demands real quality of striking.

### Erinvale Golf Club

Architect: Gary Player · Opened 1995 · 18 holes · Par 72

Erinvale, opened in 1995 and designed by Gary Player, lies at the foot of the Helderberg, above Somerset West, around twenty-five minutes from Stellenbosch. It hosted the 1996 World Cup of Golf, won by Ernie Els and Wayne Westner, then the South African Open in 2003 and 2004. The front nine crosses parkland; the back nine climbs into the foothills of the mountain, with views over False Bay. Large, subtly contoured greens and well-placed bunkers: a complete test for good players.

Signature hole: The 13th, a par 5, overlooks False Bay; the 17th, a downhill par 4, runs along the fence of the nature reserve.

### Pearl Valley Golf Estate

Architect: Jack Nicklaus · Opened 2003 · 18 holes · Par 72

A Jack Nicklaus Signature course, Pearl Valley opened in 2003 in the valley between Paarl and Franschhoek, at the foot of the Drakenstein mountains, about half an hour from Stellenbosch. Bunkers of brilliant white river sand and five lakes make it a demanding course, designed for the prevailing winds of both seasons: north-westerly in winter, south-easterly in summer. It was the first club to host the South African Open three years in a row, from 2007 to 2009. There is a hotel on the estate.

Signature hole: The 13th, a par 3 the club presents as its signature hole, demands total commitment; the 3rd holds the course record for holes-in-one.

**Concierge tip:** At Stellenbosch Golf Club, every player must carry a small bag of sand to fill their divots, and a round is expected to take 2 hours 15 minutes per nine holes: build this into your schedule. In summer, play early in the morning, before the heat, and keep the afternoon for a tasting. Book Pearl Valley and Erinvale well ahead from October to March.

## Where to stay

### Coopmanhuijs Boutique Hotel & Spa

At 33 Church Street, right in the centre, the Coopmanhuijs occupies a house built in 1713, declared a national monument in 1978 and reopened as a five-star hotel in 2010 after three years of restoration. Ask for a Deluxe room, the only ones with a private balcony; the Petite rooms vary in size and position, so call before booking. Spa, pool and Helena's restaurant on site, with De Zalze and Stellenbosch Golf Club a few minutes away.

### Lanzerac Hotel & Spa

At the entrance to the Jonkershoek valley, Lanzerac is a wine estate founded in 1692, where the first commercially released Pinotage was bottled. Its 54 rooms and suites are furnished with antiques; some Junior Suites have their own pool or hot tub, worth requesting when you book. Cellar tours leave at 11am and 3pm, and a shuttle runs into town at set times. The choice for golfers who want to sleep among the vines.

### River Manor Boutique Hotel

River Manor brings together two neighbouring manor houses a few minutes' walk from the historic centre: 18 rooms, gardens, ponds, several pools and access to the Zest spa. Ask for a room facing the Eerste river, or a ground-floor one beside the pool; one of the Deluxe rooms is reached by a steep outdoor staircase. Before dinner, The Library pours Cape brandies. De Zalze is a few minutes away.

## Where to dine

### Rust en Vrede Restaurant

On the lower slopes of the Helderberg, south of town, the Rust en Vrede estate, granted in 1694, produces powerful reds, led by Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. Since 2007 its restaurant has occupied the listed old cellar, where chef Fabio Daniel serves a six-course menu paired with the estate's wines. For the Estate Experience surprise menu, give 24 hours' notice. No children under 12; by reservation.

### 96 Winery Road

On Winery Road, a country lane between Stellenbosch and Somerset West, this farm restaurant opened in May 1996: the name comes from the year, not the address. Winemakers and Helderberg regulars gather under the wide covered terrace facing the vines. Come for the beef: the T-bone Florentine, aged 28 days on the carcass and 28 more in the house dry-ager, serves two to four; the Hollandse pepper fillet has been on the menu since the early days. Erinvale is a quarter of an hour away.

## Beyond golf

### Dorp Street and the city of oaks

Dorp Street lines up whitewashed 18th- and 19th-century houses, several of them listed, beneath oaks the oldest of which date from 1760. The Oude Leeskamer building at number 182 and the house at 176, with its former slave quarters, recall the town's colonial history. Come in the late afternoon, when the light slips beneath the branches.

### The wine route

Created in 1971, the Stellenbosch wine route now draws visitors from all over the world. Estates such as Lanzerac, which claims the first commercially released bottle of Pinotage, or Rust en Vrede, whose tasting room is open every day, can be visited between rounds. Arrange a driver: mountain roads and tastings do not mix.

### Jonkershoek Nature Reserve

About 9 kilometres from town, the Jonkershoek reserve covers nearly 9,800 hectares of mountain and fynbos, with more than 1,100 plant species. The Panorama Circuit, 17 kilometres and six hours on foot, offers views as far as Table Mountain and Cape Point on a clear day; shorter trails lead to waterfalls. Mountain bikers will find demanding routes.

## When to go

Stellenbosch has a Mediterranean climate. From October to April, the southern summer is dry and sunny, ideal for golf; February and March can be very hot, sometimes above 40°C, and the prevailing summer wind comes from the south-east. October to November and March to April offer the best balance. From June to August, winter is cool and wet, around 16°C during the day, and the courses play slower.

## Getting there

Cape Town International Airport (CPT) is about 35 minutes by road from Stellenbosch. From Europe, KLM flies non-stop from Amsterdam to Cape Town all year round, and British Airways flies from London Heathrow; Air France and Lufthansa offer direct flights from Paris and Frankfurt, Air France seasonally. A hire car or driver is essential to reach the courses and the estates.
