# Golf in Huelva: fairways among marshes, pines and Costa de la Luz estuaries

> The Huelva coast, in western Andalusia, has four 18-hole courses along its estuaries: the North and South courses at El Rompido, designed by Álvaro Arana above the marshes of the río Piedras, and Isla Canela's two layouts at Ayamonte, including a links facing Portugal. Come for quiet golf in protected natural areas, from February to June and from September to November.

The province of Huelva is the Andalusia people pass through without seeing, between the Algarve and Seville. Its coastline, the Costa de la Luz, is a succession of golden beaches, pinewoods and estuaries where the Odiel, the río Piedras and the Guadiana meet the Atlantic. Golf has settled here well away from the large developments of the Costa del Sol: you play in protected natural areas, with salt marshes and pinewoods on the horizon.

A stay revolves around two hubs. El Rompido, a fishing village in the municipality of Cartaya, half an hour west of the city of Huelva, has 36 holes by Álvaro Arana and the coast's main resort. Isla Canela, at the end of the road in Ayamonte, has two 18-hole courses on the banks of the Guadiana, a stone's throw from Portugal. Allow three quarters of an hour between the two.

The terrain is flat, the courses easy to walk and the Atlantic wind does the rest. Four to six nights let you play all four layouts at an unhurried pace, staying first at El Rompido and then near Isla Canela, on the Portuguese bank of the Guadiana, and keep a day for Doñana or for the Columbus sites on the banks of the Tinto.

## The courses

### Golf El Rompido, Campo Norte

Architect: Álvaro Arana · Opened 2006 · 18 holes · Par 72

Opened in 2006, the North Course is the one people come for: it features in Top 100 Golf Courses' ranking of the hundred best courses in Spain. Álvaro Arana set it on the edge of the Paraje Natural of the río Piedras marshes and the Flecha de El Rompido, without a single house beside the fairways. Par 72, 6,055 metres from the black tees, medium-sized greens and a strategic design that makes you think through every shot without punishing higher handicaps. A modern, playable course to keep for the middle of your stay.

### Golf El Rompido, Campo Sur

Architect: Álvaro Arana · Opened 2003 · 18 holes · Par 72

The estate's first course, opened in October 2003, is also by Álvaro Arana. Flat and easy to walk, it changes character halfway round: a compact front nine around the clubhouse, with water from the first holes, then a back nine that curls around a large area of coastal marshland. Pines, olive trees and lagoons follow one another, on fairways of warm-season grass overseeded with ryegrass in winter. Par 72, 6,058 metres from the blacks; the real challenge is the greens, fast and among the quickest in Andalusia, according to the club.

### Isla Canela Links

Architect: José Canales · Opened 2007 · 18 holes · Par 72

Designed by José Canales and opened in 2007 as Costa Esuri, this course was taken over in 2020 by Isla Canela, which renamed it and reversed its front nine. It runs along the Spanish bank of the Guadiana, north of Ayamonte, with views over the estuary and the Algarve opposite. Par 72, more than 6,500 metres from the back tees, firm, rolling fairways, fast greens and water in play on almost half the holes. The wind off the river makes the difference from one day to the next. It has hosted the second stage of DP World Tour Qualifying School.

Signature hole: The 15th, a par 5 the club regards as one of the course's most emblematic holes, rewards the player who sets up the approach rather than the one who attacks.

### Isla Canela Old Course

Architect: Juan Catarineu · 18 holes · Par 72

The Old Course, laid out by Juan Catarineu, is played on the island itself, between the estero and the marismas, five minutes from the beaches. It is a flat, comfortable parkland course with narrow fairways, well-placed bunkers and large, fast, gently sloping greens. Par 72, 6,240 metres from the blacks. At the 3rd you must carry an estero from the tee; the 14th, beside the lake, is the hardest hole on the card. A more intimate round than the Links, ideal for your first or last day.

**Concierge tip:** Start at El Rompido, then cross the Guadiana for the end of your stay, close to the Isla Canela courses, rather than driving back and forth: the two hubs are three quarters of an hour apart. On the Links, take an early tee time, before the wind off the Guadiana picks up in the afternoon.

## Where to stay

### Precise Resort El Rompido

The resort beside El Rompido's 36 holes, on the edge of the fishing village: 184 rooms, twelve suites and junior suites, more than 300 apartments for groups, a spa and pools. Ask for a Superior room: its private terrace looks over the course and the pool, which the Standard rooms do not promise. The most practical address for playing the North and South courses back to back without getting into the car.

### Companhia das Culturas

On the Portuguese bank of the Guadiana, near Castro Marim, a farm that stayed in the same family for seven generations became an organic agritourism estate in 2008: 40 hectares of stone pines, cork oaks and carob trees, a hammam, and neither television nor background music. Ask for a duplex in the old sheepfold, with a patio facing the orchard. Open all year: four nights minimum from November to April, five in spring and autumn. The Isla Canela courses are about twenty minutes away over the Guadiana bridge.

## Where to dine

### Finca Alfoliz

On a family estate in Aljaraque, among kitchen gardens and natural areas, a quarter of an hour from El Rompido, chef Xanty Elías cooks organic produce from the farm and the region, and is listed in the Michelin Guide. Order the wild boar shank, roasted for eighteen hours and carved in front of you, or a rice cooked in an earthenware pot. Open for lunch only, closed on Tuesdays; ask for the terrace.

### Consolación

A restaurant run by siblings, the third generation of the same family, in the centre of Cartaya, selected by the Michelin Guide. Start at the tapas bar with the house's signature produce, Huelva prawns or boiled langoustines, before the fresh fish, grilled or stuffed, the rice dishes and the shellfish sold by weight, on the glazed terrace. Open for lunch and dinner, lunch only on Mondays, closed on Sundays.

## Beyond golf

### Doñana

Established in 1969 and a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1994, Doñana National Park protects the marshes, dunes and pinewoods at the mouth of the Guadalquivir. More than 300 bird species have been recorded here, from flamingos to the Spanish imperial eagle, and the Iberian lynx survives here. Guided tours leave from the El Acebuche centre; the white village of El Rocío, with its sandy streets, is close by.

### In the footsteps of Columbus

Thirteen kilometres south of Huelva, where the Tinto and the Odiel meet, the Franciscan monastery of La Rábida took in Christopher Columbus around 1490, when the monks helped him champion his project. It was from Palos de la Frontera, right next door, that the Pinta, the Niña and the Santa María set sail on 3 August 1492. A half-day visit for a day off the course.

### The Flecha de El Rompido and Ayamonte

From El Rompido harbour, a ferry crosses the río Piedras to Nueva Umbría beach, twelve kilometres of sand on a protected sand spit, with no road and no buildings. At the other end of the coast, Ayamonte keeps its old lanes, and a ferry still links the town to Vila Real de Santo António, on the Portuguese bank of the Guadiana.

## When to go

The climate is mild all year round, with gentle winters and around fifty days of rain a year. Spring, from February to June, offers the best conditions: green fairways and pleasant temperatures for walking. Autumn, from September to November, is just as good once the worst of the heat has passed. July and August are hot and bring Spanish holidaymakers flocking to the coast; play early in the morning then. Winter remains playable, with wind and a few grey days.

## Getting there

Faro airport, in the Algarve, is the most convenient: allow about an hour's drive to Isla Canela via the Guadiana International Bridge, and a little more to El Rompido. Seville is the other option, about an hour and a half from El Rompido by motorway. The city of Huelva is less than half an hour from El Rompido and three quarters of an hour from Isla Canela.
