Golf in Benalmádena: Torrequebrada, between the sea and the mountains

Benalmádena, on the Costa del Sol between Torremolinos and Fuengirola, has its course right in the heart of the municipality: Golf Torrequebrada, designed by José Gancedo in 1976 and host of the 1979 Spanish Open. Lauro Golf and Severiano Ballesteros's Alhaurín Golf are half an hour away in the Guadalhorce valley. Come for a short break twenty minutes from Málaga airport, from autumn to spring, when the winter stays mild.

Plan this tripUpdated

Benalmádena is a municipality on the Costa del Sol, about twelve kilometres west of Málaga, made up of three quite distinct districts: the old white village clinging to the Sierra de Mijas, Arroyo de la Miel, the commercial town, and Benalmádena Costa, with its seafront and marina. Torrequebrada, a 1970s development whose golf course remains its raison d'être, spreads across the slopes that separate the coast from the mountains.

The terrain is hilly, planted with more than a hundred species of tree, pines, palms and olives, and you play with the Mediterranean behind you or straight ahead. There is no string of courses here as there is further west: Torrequebrada is the municipality's only 18-hole course. For variety, take the inland road towards the Guadalhorce valley, where Lauro Golf and Alhaurín Golf are each about half an hour away.

That is what makes Benalmádena a practical base rather than an intensive golf destination: you land in Málaga, you are on the first tee twenty minutes later, and in the evening you dine at the harbour or in the lanes of the village. Three to five nights are enough to play all three courses and take the cable car once to the summit of the Calamorro.

Golf Torrequebrada

  • Architect: José Gancedo
  • Opened 1976
  • 18 holes
  • Par 72

Opened in 1976, Torrequebrada is the work of José "Pepe" Gancedo, a great Spanish amateur nicknamed the "Picasso of golf", who loved American-style contoured greens. The par 72 follows the natural curves of the hillside: doglegs, lakes, well-placed bunkers and large, rolling, often raised greens that make you think on every shot. The Spanish Open was played here in 1979, won by the South African Dale Hayes. Holes 12 to 14 wrap around a large lake, and the 17th tee looks out to sea. A technical rather than long course that rewards accuracy.

Signature hole. The 16th, a par 4 and the hardest hole on the card: you aim at the palms in the middle of the fairway, then the approach carries a lake to a sloping, undulating green, with the whole coast laid out before you.

Lauro Golf

  • Architect: Folco Nardi; Mariano Benítez (2003)
  • Opened 1992
  • 27 holes
  • Par 72

In Alhaurín de la Torre, in the Guadalhorce valley, Lauro Golf was established in 1992 on the land of a former farm, the Cortijo El Paredón, now the clubhouse, set around a patio shaded by a century-old ficus. The first 18 holes are by Folco Nardi, the next nine by Mariano Benítez in 2003: three loops that can be combined, all par 72. Fourteen lakes, century-old oaks preserved and almost flat ground that is easy to walk, apart from two elevated holes with views over the valley and the sea. A technical course without being tricky, ideal for the first day.

Alhaurín Golf

  • Architect: Severiano Ballesteros
  • 18 holes
  • Par 72

At the foot of the Sierra de Mijas, Alhaurín Golf is Severiano Ballesteros's course in the Málaga hinterland: a par 72 with pronounced relief, five par 3s and five par 5s, well-kept fairways that contrast with the wild scrub of the sierra, and views of the mountains and the Mediterranean. The layout calls for a variety of shots and imagination, in the manner of its designer, while remaining playable for mid-handicappers. A nine-hole par-3 course surrounds the driving range for a warm-up or the end of the day.

Where to stay

Vincci Selección Aleysa

A five-star hotel right on the waterfront, on the front row of Benalmádena Costa beach, with direct access to the sand and every room with a sea-facing terrace. The spa and its heated pool are welcome after a day on Torrequebrada's slopes, a few minutes away by car. Málaga airport is about eight kilometres away.

Hotel La Fonda Benalmádena

A family-run house in the heart of the old village, next to the Plaza de España, some 4.5 kilometres from the beach and well above the coast. Around thirty rooms in a colonial setting, with views of the sea, the patios or the pool, a bar in the patio and the Escorpio restaurant. For those who prefer the calm of a white village to the bustle of the seafront.

Where to dine

Sollo

In neighbouring Fuengirola, in the Reserva del Higuerón, Diego Gallegos serves a tasting menu built around freshwater fish, sturgeon and caviar, with vegetables from his own aquaponic system. One Michelin star and a Michelin Green Star. The most ambitious dinner in the area, to book early.

Los Marinos José

On the paseo marítimo in Fuengirola, an institution for fish and seafood, much of it landed by the house's own boats. You choose from the display: Fuengirola prawns, Huelva langoustines, red prawns. Open for lunch only, Tuesday to Saturday: perfect after an early tee time.

Beyond golf

The stupa and the old village

On the heights, the 33-metre Stupa of Enlightenment, inaugurated in 2003, is the largest Buddhist stupa in Europe. It houses a meditation hall painted with the life of the Buddha and overlooks the entire coast. Close by, Benalmádena Pueblo offers its whitewashed lanes and its Plaza de España for a drink at sunset.

The Calamorro cable car

From Arroyo de la Miel, the cable car climbs to the summit of Monte Calamorro, at 769 metres. At the top, waymarked paths lead to several viewpoints over the Costa del Sol, and birds of prey displays take place on the summit. On windy or bad-weather days, call before going up: operations may be suspended.

Puerto Marina

Opened in 1979 and renamed Puerto Marina in 1982, Benalmádena's marina has more than a thousand berths and a distinctive architecture that has made it one of the most visited places on the Costa del Sol. Restaurants, shops and an aquarium make it the place for evening strolls, a few minutes from Torrequebrada.

When to go

Benalmádena can be played all year round, but the best season runs from October to May. Winter is the Costa del Sol's great asset: highs hover around 17 °C from December to February, with almost constant sunshine and a few days of rain. Spring is ideal, and so is autumn once the heat has eased. In July and August, averages top 30 °C: play at dawn, on a hilly course that tires you quickly.

Getting there

Málaga-Costa del Sol airport (AGP) is about twenty minutes from Torrequebrada along the coastal motorway. Without a car, the C1 Cercanías line links the airport to Benalmádena-Arroyo de la Miel station in a few stops, but a hire car remains essential for Lauro Golf and Alhaurín Golf, half an hour inland.
