Golf in Djerba: 27 holes among palms, lagoons and the Mediterranean

Djerba, the largest island in North Africa, in south-eastern Tunisia, has only one golf club, but it has 27 holes: three nines designed by Martin Hawtree and opened in 1995, La Mer, Les Palmiers and Les Acacias, in the Midoun tourist zone. Golfers come to play in the sun while Europe is cold, with a calm, white island all around. The best periods run from February to May and from October to November.

Djerba is flat, dry and luminous: 514 km² of palms, olive trees and white houses set in the Gulf of Gabès, linked to the mainland by a causeway of Roman origin and a ferry. The north-east coast, around Midoun, concentrates the large hotels along some twenty kilometres of beach. It is there, in the middle of this hotel zone, that you find Djerba Golf Club, the island's only course.

It should be said plainly: you do not come to Djerba to play one great course after another. The club offers 27 holes in three nines, combined into 18 holes depending on the day, and no other course lies within several hours' drive on the mainland. On the other hand, everything is easy: the hotels are a few minutes from the tees, the ground is flat and the sea wind gives every round its character.

Three to five nights are enough: eighteen holes each morning, varying the combinations, then the afternoon for the beach, thalassotherapy or the island itself. The souk of Houmt Souk, the potters of Guellala and the murals of Erriadh make up a quieter Djerba than its hotels, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023 for its pattern of settlement.

Djerba Golf Club – La Mer

A par 36 of 3,130 metres from the men's tees, this is the most open of the three nines. It winds between the hotels, ponds and the beach, and its 5th to 7th holes run along the Mediterranean. The fairways are forgiving, but the sea wind changes everything: on a calm day you play it with confidence; when the breeze rises, every approach becomes a calculation. The most enjoyable part of the club, the one to keep for the last day of your stay.

Signature hole. The 7th runs along the sea, with the beach a few metres from the fairway: it is the hole the club itself highlights.

Djerba Golf Club – Les Palmiers

A par 37 of 3,056 metres, this is the most technical nine at Djerba Golf Club. Date palms line the fairways, water comes into play on several holes and the out-of-bounds remind you to aim rather than simply hit. Paired with La Mer, it forms the club's most complete eighteen. It suits steady players who like to choose their club on the tee rather than reach for the driver by reflex.

Signature hole. The 8th, with water on both sides of the fairway, calls for an accurate tee shot rather than a long one.

Djerba Golf Club – Les Acacias

The shortest of the three nines, a par 35 of about 2,720 metres, laid out among acacias and palms, with a few ponds and well-placed bunkers. The greens are protected by vegetation and reward the approach more than power. It is the ideal course for finding your bearings on arrival day, for a beginner, or for nine holes in the late afternoon as the light falls over the island.

Djerba Plaza Thalasso & Spa

A large 299-room resort on 14 hectares of palm grove and gardens, with 1,500 metres of private beach and a seawater thalasso. It borders the La Mer and Les Acacias nines, and the hotel books tee times at Djerba Golf Club at a preferential rate. Ask for a Premier Deluxe room with a panoramic sea view, and save the mint tea for La Doukkana, the Moorish café, after the round.

Dar Dhiafa

In Erriadh, the old Hara Sghira, five houchs linked by vaulted passages have formed this hotel of some fifteen rooms since 2000, restored without erasing the century-old ceilings and doors. Two small pools, a hammam, and the Djerbahood murals at the end of the lane. The rooms vary a great deal: ask for one under a dome, opening onto a patio, and warn the desk the night before for an early breakfast, as the golf course is half an hour's drive away.

Where to dine

Les Palmiers Chez Neji et Catherine

A family-run restaurant in Midoun, facing the Kbess mosque, about ten minutes from the golf course. The menu mixes Tunisia and France: couscous, tuna brik, garlic prawns, grilled lamb chops and fillet steak au poivre. Ask for a table on the terrace, in the shade of the palms, and pick any evening but Monday, when it is closed.

Restaurant Baccar

In the heart of Houmt Souk, not far from Borj El Kebir, a family-run house of simple, generous Tunisian cooking: homemade couscous, tuna brik, mechouia salad, kebabs and grilled lamb. Keep it for lunch on the day you give to the souk and the fort, as Houmt Souk is half an hour from the golf course. Order the house couscous and avoid Fridays, when it is closed.

Beyond golf

Houmt Souk and Borj El Kebir

The island's capital, with 43,000 inhabitants, revolves around its souk, its whitewashed lanes and its craftsmen's shops. By the water stands Borj El Kebir, a fortress built between the 14th and 16th centuries. Come in the morning, while the stalls are still quiet, and finish with a mint tea on a terrace.

Guellala, the potters' village

In the south of the island, Guellala has worked the clay of its hills for centuries: jars for oil, grain or dates, thrown on a foot-powered wheel and fired for several days. Some forty potters keep the craft alive. The Guellala Museum presents Djerban traditions, and the hill of Dhahret Guellala, at 54 metres, is the island's highest point.

Erriadh, Djerbahood and El Ghriba

In 2014, around a hundred street artists from thirty countries painted some 250 murals on the walls of Erriadh, which became an open-air museum named Djerbahood. Close by, El Ghriba synagogue remains a place of pilgrimage for the Jewish community.

When to go

Spring, from February to May, and autumn, in October and November, are the best seasons: the weather is mild, the sun bright and the courses at their best. Winter remains playable, with averages above 12°C and often sunny days, though the wind can be cool. Summer is hot, around 33°C at its peak, and is played only early in the morning. Rainfall is low, about 200 mm a year, mostly from September to December.

Getting there

Djerba-Zarzis airport (DJE), at Mellita, nine kilometres west of Houmt Souk, receives direct flights, often seasonal, from several French and European cities. Allow about 35 minutes' transfer to the Midoun tourist zone and the golf course. By road, the island is reached from the mainland via the El Kantara causeway or the Ajim–Djorf ferry.
