Golf in Pattaya: Siam Country Club and the courses of the Gulf of Thailand

Pattaya, on Thailand's east coast about 150 km from Bangkok, gathers a remarkable choice of courses in its hinterland: Siam Country Club and its four courses, Laem Chabang designed by Jack Nicklaus, Phoenix Gold and Chee Chan, all 25 to 40 minutes from the beach. Golfers come for the variety of layouts, the quality of the caddies and a trip that is easy to organise from Suvarnabhumi airport. The best time is from November to February, dry and cooler.

Plan this tripUpdated

A former fishing village that became a seaside resort from the 1960s, Pattaya stretches along a bay on the Gulf of Thailand, in Chonburi province. The town has several faces. In the centre, the seafront is busy day and night; to the south, Pratumnak Hill and the long beach at Jomtien are calmer, while to the north the Naklua district keeps a residential pace. Offshore, the island of Koh Larn rises a few kilometres from the coast.

For the golfer, the interest lies elsewhere: in the hinterland, among pineapple plantations, reservoirs and wooded hills, the courses follow one another less than an hour's drive away. Siam Country Club alone has four, including the Old Course, opened in 1971 and a regular host of the Honda LPGA Thailand. Jack Nicklaus at Laem Chabang, Denis Griffiths at Phoenix Gold and Golfplan at Chee Chan complete a rare line-up.

The trip is simple to organise: an early start, eighteen holes with a caddie, lunch at the clubhouse, then an afternoon by the pool or on the beach. The seafood restaurants of Jomtien, Nong Nooch botanical garden and the Sanctuary of Truth, a carved wooden temple facing the sea, fill the rest days. Choosing a hotel south of town puts you closer to both the courses and the quietest beaches.

Siam Country Club, Old Course

  • Architect: Ichisuke Izumi; Schmidt-Curley (2007)
  • Opened 1971
  • 18 holes
  • Par 72

Opened in 1971 by the Japanese architect Ichisuke Izumi, the Old Course is Thailand's first private course and the centrepiece of Siam Country Club, about twenty-five minutes from the centre. Renovated in 2007 by Schmidt-Curley, this par 72 of more than 7,000 yards runs its fairways, lined with century-old tamarind and acacia trees, towards fast, contoured greens. A regular host of the Honda LPGA Thailand, it demands precise driving. The club has three other layouts: the Plantation (27 holes, 2008), the Waterside (2014) and the Rolling Hills (2020), enough to play for a week without repeating yourself.

Signature hole. The 18th, a dogleg par 5, finishes in front of the clubhouse terrace: tempting in two, it grows more and more demanding as you near the green.

Laem Chabang International Country Club

  • Architect: Jack Nicklaus
  • 27 holes

Half an hour north of Pattaya, near Sri Racha, Laem Chabang International Country Club lines up twenty-seven holes by Jack Nicklaus on an estate of about 280 hectares. Three nines of distinct character, Mountain, Lake and Valley, combine at will: hills and raised greens guarded by deep bunkers on the first, a winding stream on the second, technical water hazards on the third, the longest. Natural boulders and coconut palms add to the strategy. The club also offers floodlit night golf, welcome when the heat rises.

Signature hole. The 2nd on the Mountain, a downhill par 3 to a green bordered by water, is one of the most memorable holes on the estate.

Phoenix Gold Golf & Country Club

  • Architect: Denis Griffiths; Pirapon Namatra (2014)
  • Opened 1993
  • 27 holes

Designed by Denis Griffiths and opened in 1993, Phoenix Gold lies some fifteen kilometres beyond Jomtien, half an hour from the centre. Its twenty-seven holes, Mountain, Lake and Ocean, were extensively reworked from 2014 under the direction of Pirapon Namatra: greens, bunkers, tees and drainage rebuilt, and the Lake rerouted with new water hazards. Elsewhere the hilly, wooded terrain leaves little room for water; the game here is mostly about the slope of the fairways and greens. The Mountain, at the foot of jungle-covered hills, is often judged the finest of the three.

Signature hole. The par 5 that closes the Ocean starts from the highest point on the estate: the second shot is played facing the Gulf of Thailand.

Chee Chan Golf Resort

  • Architect: Golfplan (David Dale)
  • 18 holes
  • Par 72

Chee Chan was designed by David Dale of Golfplan on gently rolling land south of Jomtien, about forty minutes from the centre. Its setting is unique: the Buddha of almost 110 metres inlaid with gold leaf in the cliff of Khao Chee Chan overlooks almost every hole. This par 72 of more than 7,200 yards from the back tees combines long par 4s, lakes, wetlands and sculpted bunkers, on zoysia fairways. A well-groomed course with attentive service, as appealing to good players as to lovers of fine scenery.

Where to stay

Royal Cliff Beach Hotel

Opened in 1974 on Pratumnak Hill, the Royal Cliff Beach Hotel is the heart of a group of four hotels overlooking the bay. Two private beaches, the Cliff Spa and the Sky Aquarium, a long infinity pool with a glass tip facing the Gulf. Some rooms look onto the hill: ask for an Ocean Deluxe, with a sea-facing balcony. Halfway between the southern courses and those of the hinterland.

Rabbit Resort Pattaya

On Dongtan Beach, a family that has owned the land for more than fifty years has built a village of 49 rooms: Thai houses in reclaimed wood, furnished with antiques. Deborah, the owner, greets guests at breakfast. Ask for a Forest room, a two-storey Thai house, bearing in mind that it is reached by stairs; of the two pools, one is for adults only. The beach is across a quiet lane, Phoenix Gold some twenty kilometres inland.

Where to dine

Fish Club

Selected by the Michelin Guide, Fish Club occupies a beachfront terrace at the Andaz, in Na Jomtien, some ten kilometres from Phoenix Gold and Chee Chan. Fish and seafood from local fishermen are grilled over coconut husks: order them with the house peanut sriracha sauce. Book a table outside for sunset; in the evening a DJ sets up, so lunch is the quieter option.

Pladids

A small Thai address in the Pong area, not far from Siam Country Club, Pladids is selected by the Michelin Guide for its homely, very local cooking. The menu changes with the seasons; ask for the rice of the day, made with whatever the market offers. Closed Monday to Wednesday, open from 11am to early evening, cash only: the natural lunch stop after a round at Siam.

Beyond golf

The Sanctuary of Truth

In Naklua, at the north end of the bay, the Sanctuary of Truth is a building made entirely of carved wood, begun in 1981 by the businessman Lek Viriyaphan. Part temple, part palace, inspired by the kingdom of Ayutthaya and by Hindu and Buddhist traditions, it raises its highest spire 105 metres above the sea. Every wall is covered with deities and mythological scenes; come in the late afternoon, when the low light brings out the relief of the wood.

Nong Nooch Botanical Garden

South of Pattaya, along Sukhumvit Road, Nong Nooch covers about 200 hectares and is said to be the largest botanical garden in South-East Asia. Opened to the public in 1980 by the Tansacha family, it holds an important cycad gene bank, French formal gardens inspired by Versailles and an Italian garden. A morning is enough to see the essentials, ideally before the heat.

Koh Larn and the Khao Chee Chan Buddha

Some 7.5 km offshore, Koh Larn is reached by boat from Pattaya; its west-coast beaches, such as Tawaen or Samae, suit a day of swimming, quieter on weekdays. To the south, the Khao Chee Chan Buddha, laser-etched into the limestone cliff and inlaid with gold in 1996 for King Bhumibol's jubilee, is worth a detour, even for those not playing the neighbouring course.

When to go

The best time is from November to February: dry season, less humid air and courses in very good condition, which also makes it the high season; book tee times in advance. March and April are the hottest months, when you must play at dawn. From May to October the monsoon brings showers that can be heavy; play in the morning, prices drop and the courses are quieter, but on some days buggies are kept to the paths.

Getting there

Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi airport (BKK), served by direct or one-stop flights from Europe, is the usual arrival point: allow about 1 hour 30 to 1 hour 45 minutes by motorway to Pattaya. U-Tapao airport, some fifty kilometres to the south, mainly handles domestic flights. Once there, a private driver remains the simplest way to reach the courses.
